In high school, I used a lot of time watching shows like Doctor Who  on Netflix. I enjoyed crafts, even though I wasn't good at many of them. My senior year, I became active on Pinterest. And there was one phrase that really, really irritated me: "wasting time." My brother playing video games was "wasting his time." I, binging Netflix for three hours, was "wasting my time." My dad, sitting in his armchair and watching PBS after work, was "wasting time." It took me a few years to realize exactly why that bothered me so much, but I've finally figured it out.

Shortly after the Orlando shooting, I published my Christian Closet post to conclude the series. I said then that I would speak more on Orlando when I could gather my thoughts. As the new president of my school's sexuality and gender discussion group, I decided to share those thoughts through the group's website. For those of you interested in reading, the link is below. Between finals week, moving out of the dorm, and my summer internship, I haven't kept up with the blog. I hope to get a few more posts up this summer. I've been working on this last Christian Closet post for a month now. It would be wrong of me to continue my blogging on the queer community without stopping to acknowledge the abhorrent event that recently rocked that community. Since the murder of 50 people in a gay nightclub in Orlando on June 12, my friends and I have been reminded just how fragile our hard-won freedom is. We're reminded to count every day a blessing and never let go of each other. In a world where men and women even younger than me are shot and hung and beaten for an intrinsic part of their identity, the freedom to be ourselves is rare and worth clinging to. After my last post, A Coming Out , I received some feedback from my support group about how they identified with my struggles and some of the things I said. I also had several requests, both from those within LGBT Christian circles and those outside those circles, to portray more specific examples of how the church and its people have hurt LGBT individuals, and give examples of what the church and its people could do or have done to help and encourage LGBT individuals. Today I'm starting a new weekly series featuring friends and acquaintances of mine, in an effort to fill those requests. Some of these wonderful people are loud and proud; some are still struggling to find their own identity; some have become comfortable in their own skin but not yet comfortable with leaving the closet. This post happens to be my 600th ever written, and my first written or published for 2016. I never planned it that way -- actually, I didn't plan to write this post until just now, at one a.m. in bed -- but I guess God knew I was ready for a big one. About a year ago, I came out online as bisexual, through a blog post that shared a journal entry from the previous November. I told a handful of people before I posted anything. When I did have my "coming out," it wasn't really a coming out. It was just part of a series sharing many thoughts and struggles I'd had over my first college semester, which happened to include sexuality.
